How does stem cell therapy work?

Stem cell therapy is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that uses stem cells to promote healing. Stem cells are the basis for all the other cells in your body. They’re unique in that they can transform into any other type of cell, like nerve, muscle, or tendon cells.

Injecting a stem cell-rich solution into damaged or inflamed tissue causes your body to produce new and healthy cells. These new cells speed up healing while relieving pain and encouraging mobility.

What types of musculoskeletal problems benefit from stem cell therapy?

The pain management specialists at NYC Pain MD use stem cell therapy to treat various musculoskeletal problems, including:

  • Knee pain
  • Joint pain
  • Arthritis
  • Sports injuries
  • Shoulder pain
  • Hip pain

Stem cell therapy can also provide relief for lower back and neck pain.

What happens during stem cell therapy?

At NYC Pain MD, stem cell therapy is an outpatient procedure that takes 60-90 minutes.

Your NYC Pain MD provider injects a medication, like filgrastim, into your body a week before your stem cell therapy procedure. Filgrastim moves stem cells from your bone marrow into your bloodstream to be harvested.

A week later, you return to the office for your stem cell therapy treatment. Your NYC Pain MD provider draws several samples of blood and transfers them to syringes. Then, they inject the stem cell-rich solution into a specific area of your body, like a swollen knee joint or your lower back.

The number of stem cell injections you receive depends on several things, including the severity of your symptoms and treatment goals.

After administering the stem cell injections, your provider moves you to a recovery room for observation. Since the stem cells are from your own body, they present few risks. In fact, most people are able to return to work and other activities within an hour of receiving stem cell injections.

Is stem cell therapy safe?

Stem cell therapy is safe and typically well-tolerated. After treatment, it’s normal to have mild swelling and bruising at the injection sites, but any discomfort should resolve within a day or two. If your symptoms continue or worsen, contact NYC Pain MD right away.
